A water buffalo or not, that is the question:<\/p>\n

Whether ’tis nobler in the public mind to suffer<\/p>\n

The hoofs and horns of outrageous fortune,<\/p>\n

Or to take arms against a sea of bison,<\/p>\n

And by opposing kill them? To die, extinct,<\/p>\n

No more; and by a sleep to say we end<\/p>\n

The thunder, and the thousand natural herds<\/p>\n

The land was heir to: ’tis a consumption<\/p>\n

Devoutly to be wished. To die, extinct;<\/p>\n

Extinct, now just a dream \u2013 ay, there’s the rub:<\/p>\n

For in that sleep of death what buffalo may come?<\/p>\n

When they have shuffled off this mortal coil,<\/p>\n

Ought give us pause \u2013 we ought respect<\/p>\n

For what makes an ecosystem but largest life?<\/p>\n

And who would bear the cries and end of life,<\/p>\n

The oppresseds\u2019 wrong, our proud human hunger,<\/p>\n

The pangs of despised creatures, the law\u2019s delay,<\/p>\n

The insolence of offices, that spurn greatest need.<\/p>\n

The patients\u2019 merit, often unworthy aches,<\/p>\n

When we ourselves might their quietus shake<\/p>\n

For a few dollars? Who would our burdens bear?<\/p>\n

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,<\/p>\n

But those buffalo under dread of death,<\/p>\n

From whose undiscovered country<\/p>\n

No lima bean returns, puzzles the will,<\/p>\n

And makes us rather keeps those beasts we have<\/p>\n

Than resort to others that we know not of<\/p>\n

Thus conscience ought make cowards of us all,<\/p>\n

And let the native hosts of bubalis<\/em><\/p>\n

Be scattered o’er with golden gleam of thought,<\/p>\n

And enterprises of great pith and moment,<\/p>\n

With this regard our murder turn awry,<\/p>\n

And halt in the name of action.<\/p>\n
