Frisbee championship

Dear Fellowcitizens,

5 years ago I experienced my freshman year here at the BYU. Things were different then. The Cannon Center had our parents fingerprints on it still, the Hinckley building was being thrown up brick by brick, and Stover Hall in Helaman Halls was still a boys dorm. We were a gangly ragtag group of pre-mis 18 year-olds living on our own for the first time. Half of us shaved half as often as we do now and the other half didn’t shave at all. We stayed up late, did homework, and had clever conversations on everything we knew nothing about. That first semester one of us had a wise idea to start a Frisbee team. Ultimate Frisbee was not new but it was definitely a under-appreciated sport. In an effort to strengthen our bounds as an Elder’s quorum we signed up as many as we could and began holding practices as we realized that this game did have official rules. The Helaman Halls Quad became our haunt. It became quite common to shuffle off to bed after our 10 pm hall prayer only to be aroused moments later by the Frisbee call. The games, skirmishes, and practices would occur regardless of day of the week, homework loads, health, weather, or the complaints of all the girl’s halls that overlooked our quad. These were the days never to be forgotten, the birthing of Righteously Indignant Frisbee.

You may find you recognize a few of the players. I’m the one in the hat with the camera. You see, I wasn’t on the team. I, as the number 1 fan, was responsible for chronicling the history made that year. Unfortunately we were only number 1 off the field that year. But there began a tradition of honor, sportsmanship, and Frisbee fun which continues to bless us here in Park Plaza (and our Stonebridge Friends) up to this day.

The players have rotated and the name of the team may have altered now and then, but the spirit has continued in Team Quick which now takes the field in honor of an older, more experienced group of BYU Coeds. The game has gotten harder, and faster but we’ve gotten quicker to match. It is no longer an Elder’s quorum team but a team representing all of us. And though I pay honor at this time of a departed team of long ago Team Quick encompasses more than just that group of Freshman from years beyond. It is built upon the remnants of the BYU 78th Ward, blessed by the talents of the Quick family, and powered by the hearts of the Provo 22nd Ward.

Those before may have shed their blood and their sweat on the Frisbee field.

But tears will never be shed because we are a team that always looks forward.

Today we look forward to a day near at hand, a day when our mettle will once more be tested on those same fields (the north Intermural fields  on 2230 N University Ave) from long ago now coated in AstroTurf and patrolled by BYU intermural staff. Friday, in a few score hours from this moment, Team Quick will take to the field in a challenge of supremacy over the BYU Intermural Frisbee Competition. We encourage you, as we honor this tradition, to come forth and share in the joy of the moment. Come support your team at 7:15 pm this Friday as they step up to their next great contest.

Go Team, Quick!

Sincerely,

The sneaky activities co-chair that hacked into the ward communications email account
