La Luna

I am traveling to the moon
Long dirt roads wind through the forest
The light is fading fast so I speed
I hit a rock and slow down
The road splits, I turn left.
The bushes close in, scrapping the sides of the car.
This was a bad idea :/
The “shortcut” loops back
I’m glad, I don’t have to turn around
The sun is gone, my headlight ignite.
It’s time to give up, I turn back
And see the sign
Turner mountain, 5 miles
Well…okay
I turn again. Upwards!

I count the miles now (and the bumps)
2 miles to go (I think I hit the oil pan)
A gasp comes from beside me,
The Moon.
Big and round and golden
Yellow as a rising sun breaking above the trees
It’s huge.

At least 16% bigger than usual.
No, closer, not bigger, Perigee?
Whatever, ½ mile to the summit.
The road is much worse,
I up my air-fuel mixture and rocket up
An hour’s drive and we summit.

I walk straight to the moon
Ignoring the strange men loading a trailer
after dark, on a mountain top
(robbing a cell tower?)
The mountains lay before me, around me.
Volcanic Lassen casting shadows in the moonlight.
It’s cold, windy.
All my pictures look like sunsets
A world of light. Or shadow
Isn’t it always both?
Either way its super.
My anxieties fade like the sun
I found peace for one more day
I let the car find the way home.
I’m busy traveling to the moon.
